The Association of Nigeria Musicologists

The Association of Nigerian Musicologists (ANIM) was established in 1993 at Ilorin, then as Musicological Association of Nigeria (MSN). It holds its annual National conferences in Nigerian Universities as approved at the Annual General meetings. It became an affiliate of International Musicological Society based in Switzerland in 2012.

Meet Our Executives

Christian Onyeji FANIM holds a Doctor of Music degree from the University of Pretoria, Republic of South Africa, a Master of Arts degree in composition, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music as well as a Diploma in Music Education from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. A Professor of music at the Department of Music, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Christian is an internationally recognized Nigerian music composer, educator and scholar who specialize in Research-Composition, a compositional approach that applies ethnomusicological procedures in the composition of modern African art music that is a logical continuum of African traditional music. His numerous compositions for different media have been performed within and outside Nigeria.

He is a researcher on African music as well as composes from the African stock. He has made contributions to African art music for symphony orchestra, drummistic piano style of modern compositions for the piano, choral compositions, solo voice and piano compositions as well as scholarly works in some leading journals. His Christmas Choral composition titled “N’ihi n’amuworo ayi otu nwa” published by Oxford University Press and recorded on their Christmas Choral Highlights has been performed by different choirs of the world including the Mommon Tabernacle Choir. His publication of a collection of twenty Nigerian songs composed or arranged by him for solo voices and piano accompaniment titled Nka Emume, (Art for Celebration), has become valuable resource for voice students in Nigerian Universities.

His piano works appeared on the Piano Music of African and the African Diaspora, Vol. 1, Early Intermediate and Vol. 2, Intermediate, edited by William Chapman Nyaho and published by Oxford University Press. His work also appeared in the Anthology of African Piano Music edited by Li Xin and Akin Euba, published by SMPH in Beijing, China. Some of his piano works have also been recently recorded on the label of Heritage Records in UK on Piano Music by African Composers, performed by Rebeca Omodia. He is expecting new recordings of some of his piano works. He is currently teaching, researching and composing in Nigeria.

I am Prof. Atinuke Adenike Olayade of the Department of Music, Delta State University, Abraka. I teach composition, analytical studies, keyboard studies and research methodology. I have attended national and international conferences. I have visited, Atlanta Geogia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Saint Lucia, South Africa, Ghana and Kenya among others.

I have published in Oralfrica, Nordic, Tydskrif, Tailor and Frances, International Journal of of Humanities, International Journal of Social Science, African Musicology and ANIM Journal to mention but a few. I am a member of ISOLA, ICTM, ACLACS, PASMAE and ANIM. I have BA Music Composition, MA Music Composition and Ph.D Ethnomusicology.

I have visited, Atlanta Geogia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Saint Lucia, South Africa, Ghana and Kenya among others.

Prof. Atinuke Adenike OLAYADE

Omolabake Dada, a principal lecturer, teaches at The Polytechnic Ibadan, Ibadan. She is the Secretary General of the Association of Nigerian Musicology (ANIM). Omolabake’s research focuses on Music Historiology, Analytical Musicology and Documenting of African Performance Practices with interest in Nigeria, South Western Nigerian and specifically Yoruba culture. Omolabake has attended national and international conferences and workshops, published well over twenty (20) articles in both national and international peer-reviewed journals. Her work has explored musical education discussions, indigenous and popular musical traditions which addressed such themes as:

  • Documenting and archiving of traditional musical practices
  • Performance practices
  • Traditional musical Instrument technology
  • Music education

Omolabake received her Higher National Diploma in Music Technology from The Polytechnic Ibadan; B.A. Ed. In Music from Ekiti State University; Postgraduate Diploma and  Master in Managerial Psychology from the University of Ibadan; M. A. in Music Education from University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos where she is currently studying for her Ph.D.

Omolabake Adejoke DADA

Hope Nkechi Okpala is from Akpo in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria. She is a lecturer in the Department of Music Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam, Anambra State. She holds Diploma in Music Education (UNN), BA Music (UNN), MA Music (UNIZIK) and PhD in Ethnomusicology (UNIZIK). She is a performer (choral music) and a choral director.

She has published articles in both national and international journals. She is a member of ANIM and SOMEN. Currently, she is the assistant secretary of ANIM. Her research interests are African music and performance.

Dr. Hope Nkechi OKPALA

Lectures at the The Polytechnic Ibadan. He is a versatile strings player, majors in Guitar and violin. He holds M.A degree in music; Ethnomusicology. (African musicology)
Currently researching in music of Akoko land for his PhD degree. He has published some articles in national journals and have attended conferences across Nigeria. He is a member of music associations, notable among them is Association of Nigerian Musicologists (ANIM) and he is current Treasurer of the association.

Rotimi Peters OLOGUNDUDU

Eunice Ukamaka Ibekwe is a Professor of Ethnomusicology. She had her MA and PhD from the Department of Music, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. Eunice is the present Head, Department of Music Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka. She is a Fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies. (FACLS) She holds the post of Financial Secretary in ANIM. Her area of interest is ethnic music.

Augustina Chizoba Ezebube holds a PhD and a Master’s degree in music (Ethnomusicology) from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. She is a lecturer in the department of music, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education Rumuolumeni Port Harcourt. Her research interest includes African Music and Dance. She is the welfare officer of ANIM and can be reached on tinaezebube1969@gmail.com.

Toyin Samuel Ajose is an ethnomusicologist with broad research interest in the creative forms of Pentecostalism with emphasis on Christian/gospel music in Nigeria/African Pentecostalism. His research focuses on two phenomena: first, musical expressions in Prayer Mountain Spirituality among Yoruba Pentecostals in Southwestern Nigeria, and second, Christian music and social engagements in contemporary Nigeria. Samuel holds a doctorate degree from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He was the immediate past head of Department of Music, University of Ibadan, and currently serves as the Director of Music at the Chapel of the Resurrection, University of Ibadan. Dr. Toyin Samuel AJOSE

I am Dr. Ayoade Jacob Ekunwale. I obtained my N.C.E certificate in Music from Osun State College of Education, Ilesa, Osun State. Also, B. A (Hons); M. A. (Theory and Composition) and Ph.D (Ethnomusicology) from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. I teach Music at the Department of Music, Federal College of Education, Okene, Kogi State, and currently the Head of the Department.
